Dear Maunalani Residents, Families and Friends,
What we know about COVID-19 today is a disturbing reality: we have little idea who among us is carrying the disease. Even when thorough screening of staff and residents is conducted daily, someone may be a carrier, with no symptoms, and feeling just fine. We learn that up to half of silent spreaders “feel fine” one day, but by the time they come down with the telltale cough, fever, and fatigue the next day, they have potentially infected a large number of people. Moreover, these individuals, who are infected with the coronavirus and never, ever feel sick—make up 40 percent of infections in the United States. This may have been the cause for our one resident earlier this week. Subsequent to the update we provided you on 8/26/20, three of our care givers tested positive and are now self-quarantined at home.
Each day we encounter new challenges and we apply what we have learned to our continuous improvement plan.
We have recently received a limited supply of test kits from the Federal government that will allow us to obtain results in 20 minutes. We will start with testing the staff and residents weekly and adjust the testing frequency according to the infection rates in the Honolulu community. We are aware that until we test daily, we may continue to have individuals who feel nothing one day but may make someone else feel unwell the same day. However, with this added measure, we hope to prevail in the battle against COVID.
We continue to ask for your understanding and patience during this trying time. It is our mission to provide as safe an environment for every one as possible despite the current circumstances. Please rest assured that we keep tender loving care in our focus for each and every individual resident under our charge.
We wish you continued health and safety.
Sincerely,
Sai Chantavy
